⚡ Sight Drafts

US Capital Private Bank Knowledge Base

📌 Definition

A Sight Draft is a financial instrument in which payment is demanded immediately upon presentation (sight). It instructs the drawee (typically a buyer or bank) to pay the payee (typically a seller) on sight, i.e., as soon as the document is seen and verified.

Sight drafts are a key part of international trade finance, especially under letters of credit, and are governed by UCC Article 3 and UCP 600 (Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits).

💼 Parties Involved

Icon Role Description
✍️ Drawer The seller/exporter who issues the draft requesting immediate payment.
🏦 Drawee The buyer/importer (or their bank) responsible for paying upon sight.
👤 Payee The party receiving the payment (often the drawer themselves).

🏛️ Legal Characteristics

  • 📜 Demand Instrument: Payable upon presentation, not at a future date.

  • 🔐 Secure Payment: Often used with shipping documents under a letter of credit.

  • 🛡️ Risk-Managed: Protects sellers in cross-border transactions by ensuring payment before delivery.

📄 How It Works

  1. Seller ships goods and prepares a sight draft.

  2. 📬 Draft and documents (e.g., bill of lading, insurance certificate) are sent to the buyer’s bank.

  3. 🧾 Drawee (buyer or their bank) reviews and pays upon sight of the documents.

  4. 📦 Goods are released once payment is made or draft is honored.
